Strength and Balance
Helping You Stay Steady in Later Life

Seated Exercise
Staying strong and balanced into later life
As we get older, it's natural to notice changes in strength, balance and confidence. Simple everyday activities such as climbing stairs, getting out of a chair, carrying shopping or reaching into a cupboard can become more difficult. The good news is that these changes are not an inevitable part of ageing. Regular, targeted exercise can make a significant difference at any age.
Research shows that a structured programme of strength and balance exercises can improve leg strength to that of someone 20 years younger in just 12 weeks. Better strength and balance can help you stay independent, move with greater confidence and reduce your risk of falls.
Strength and balance exercise is particularly beneficial if you:
-
Are over 60 and want to stay active and independent.
-
Feel unsteady on your feet or worry about falling.
-
Have had a fall or a near miss.
-
Have become less active following illness, injury or surgery.
-
Want to improve your mobility, confidence and overall fitness.
What happens during a session?
Every programme starts with an assessment of your current strength, balance, mobility and personal goals. Your exercises are then tailored specifically to your abilities and any medical conditions you may have.
Sessions may include exercises to:
-
Improve leg and core strength.
-
Enhance balance and stability.
-
Increase flexibility and joint movement.
-
Build confidence with walking, turning and everyday movements.
-
Practise functional activities such as standing from a chair, climbing steps and carrying objects safely.
Exercises are progressed gradually at a pace that feels comfortable, ensuring they remain safe, achievable and effective.
