Safe & effective exercise during and following a cancer diagnosis in Stevenage, North East Hertfordshire

Sadly it’s estimated that 1 in 2 people in the UK will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in their lifetime (www.cancerreserachuk.org February 2023). The most commonly diagnosed cancers in England and Wales are breast, prostate, lung and bowel cancer. Thankfully, early diagnosis and advancing treatments mean that cancer has become more of a long-term condition that can be managed through pharmacological and lifestyle interventions. Half of people diagnosed with cancer in the UK will go on to live a further 10 years or more and cancer survival is higher amongst women than men. Regular exercise, as well as maintaining a healthy weight and managing stress, has been shown to reduce rates of cancer recurrence

In 2010 I worked for Breast Cancer Care and Prostate Cancer UK to develop an exercise programme for cancer survivors. During this time I learnt not only about the multiple benefits of exercise during and after cancer treatment, but also the real challenges  people face in getting started and maintaining a regular programme of physical activity. However, it wasn’t until I received my own diagnosis of breast cancer in 2018 that I truly understood the value of being active and how challenging it can be. In 2022 I brought my experiences together to qualify as a Cancer Exercise Specialist.

It can be really challenging to find the time and motivation to stay active and to know which exercises are safe or beneficial. That is where my expertise comes in. I use my experience and knowledge of cancer and exercise to create a highly specified programme for people who want to become more active during or following cancer. I make sure the exercises are manageable, enjoyable and are goal-oriented.
